Menorca Regarded by many as the “Jewel of the Balearics”, Menorca combines stunning beaches and secluded coves with a rugged landscape and a rich history. Menorca is the easternmost of the Balearics and consequently is the first place in Spain to see the sun rise. Approximately 40km in length and 20km at its widest point, Menorca bestows 216km of coastline upon it´s inhabitants. A vast and diverse range of beaches await it´s visitors. Its strategic position in the Mediterranean means it has been the theatre for numerous battles down the centuries. The Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Moors have all dominated at one time or another. The British ruled during the 17th and 18th centuries and, as a consequence the capital town of Mao (Mahon) has a distinct Georgian style. The port (one of the largest natural harbours in Europe) is lined with restaurants and bars. In contrast, Ciutadella at the opposite end of the island retains much of its Moorish heritage, a maze of narrow streets and numerous palaces; it is protected as an UNESCO Monumental Site. Two thousand prehistoric sites have been uncovered in Menorca; troglodyte caves, villages from the 1st and 2nd millennium BC, burial mounds, megaliths and the strange tapered towers of stone known as Talayots, built by the Talayotic civilisation in the Bronze Age. Menorca boasts more ancient remains than any other Mediterranean island.
