Cadiz Licked by salty ocean winds and bleached by the almost African sun, the
province of Cadiz offers a coastal and rural paradise. Miles of virgin white sandy beaches, quaint hillside and fishing villages, a wealth of Natural Parks, and an ambience of graceful antiquity, Cadiz is mysterious and inviting.
Arguably the oldest city in Europe, Cadiz sits on a narrow peninsula,
pounded on all sides by the Atlantic Ocean. Wander along the waterfront,
with its well-tended gardens and open squares, passing through parkland with
sweeping views of the bay. Enter the charming Moorish Ancient quarter of the
city with its magnificent Cathedral and other historic sites. Witness the city´s Carnival, in February, a riotous explosion of festivities, fancy dress, singing and drinking. Sample fine sherry and brandy in traditional bodegas of Jerez de la Frontera. Wonder at its magnificent dancing horses and enjoy flamenco at its most authentic. Experience a flavour of Cadiz.
The lush green hillsides of Cadiz, like Malaga, are dotted with the beautiful "pueblos blancos" (white villages) with their distinctive white-washed houses, cobbled, narrow streets and iron balconies. Visit these and beach-side villages such as Sancti Petri and follow the windy coastal road to Zahara de los Atunes for its golden sandy beach.
The stretch of Atlantic Coast between Cadiz and Tarifa, (Spain´s most southermost tip), is called the Costa de la "Luz" (Coast of Light), characterized by strong, pure light, hence its name. Stride along miles of
white empty beaches, lose yourself in the huge windswept sand dunes and
glimpse a view of Africa across the narrow Strait of Gibraltar.Tarifa, with its relentless winds all year round and excellent waves, is now regarded as the windsurfing and kite-surfing capital of Europe. These breezes also drive the numerous wind turbines visible in the hills above where a wilderness of cacti, sunflowers and lone cork trees melts seemlessly into the distance. Cadiz is a land of discovery!
