Spotlight on Barrio de Salamanca

Written by:

Barrio Salamanca, situated to the north east of the Plaza de Sol and Madrid’s geographical heart, is set out on an easy-to-navigate grid system built around the three avenues of Serrano, Velázquez and Goya.

Synonymous with elegance, luxury and style, Salamanca is where the crème de la crème of Madrid come to shop, dine and socialise. Lined with top international brand stores and exclusive independent boutiques, Calle Serrano is often compared to New York’s 5th Avenue. Top names like Gucci, Armani and Carolina Herrera rub shoulders with smaller Spanish fashion and jewellery designers, and a branch of the famous Spanish department store El Corte Ingles houses everything from food to clothing to furniture. When we are feeling flush, we head to Serrano and shop til’ we drop, stopping only to enjoy a café con lecheor some tapas and a vinitoin one of the great cafes or bars in the area!

Locals and visitors alike come to barrio Salamanca to sample some of the best dining options in the city. With everything from classic Spanish to international and fusion cuisine, many of Madrid’s top restaurants can be found in the neighbourhood. Just a few of our favourites are Pan de Lujo on c/Jorge Juan, which serves up classic Spanish dishes with a twist, and Juan Bravo 25, one of the best tapas places in town.

The neighbourhood is home to some of the city’s most well-preserved and elegant architecture, and an entire day can be spent just wandering the streets and enjoying the view. The apartments in Salamanca are often spacious, bright and elegant, and many have kept their original features and furnishings, adding to the stylish ambience of the area.

The neighbourhood also has its fair share of cultural sights and attractions. The Plaza de Colon is a grand square separating the barrio from the long thoroughfare the Paseo de la Castellana, and the nearby National Library is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon. One of Salamanca’s biggest draws however is the gorgeous ParquedelBuenRetiro. Right in the heart of the distrcit, El Retiro is Madrid’s most popular park, and a weekend visit here is an absolute must, whether to take a walk, go for a run, row a boat on the lake, or simply enjoy the entertainment on offer.
